TURKISH MACHINERY INDUSTRY

The Turkish machinery industry has been one of the driving forces behind Turkey’s economic endeavor with its cutting edge design, in-house research and development, and cost competitive prices. With the majority of manufacturers being small and medium sized enterprises, the industry is lean and agile, and has the capacity and flexibility to absorb state-of-the-art global trends. The advanced engineering skills, well-trained labor force, high quality manufacturing techniques and globally connected profile make Turkey a preferred supplier in the international production network.

The product range of the Turkish machinery consists of internal combustion engines and turbines, heavy industrial and agricultural machinery, woodworking, textile and food processing machineries, and a variety of domestic electrical appliances, as well as parts and accessories.

Turkey’s domestic appliance, automotive and construction sectors are huge sub-sectors in the country’s machinery industry. Turkey is the second largest domestic appliance producer in Europe with ambitions to become the leading European producer over the next decade. Turkey’s automotive sector has holds ranks including being the largest bus producer and third largest light commercial vehicle producer among European Union countries. Turkey is the 17th largest automotive producer in the world and has attracted major international automotive producer such as Renault, Mercedes-Benz, Ford Otosan and Honda that have either joint venture partnerships with local firms, direct investment, or license agreements.

The construction section in Turkey constitutes about 10% of the exports of Turkey’s machinery industry. Turkish construction and engineering firms are able to design, erect, build and operate almost all kinds of civil and industrial projects ranging from hydroelectric power plants, large scale petroleum and natural gas pipelines, motorways, high-rise buildings, and hotel and tourist resorts. In 2008, 23 Turkish companies were listed in the “Top 225 International Contractors,” given by ENR – Engineering News Record, the leading industry magazine. Turkey had the third most companies in this report, following China and the U.S. Turkey also ranks among the top 12 producers of building materials in the world, with such products as cement, glass, steel and ceramic tiles taking a leading role.

The outlook for the machinery industry is promising as production is expected to increase 12-15% during the next five years. With its immense potential and export strength, the industry is making a mark on the global landscape.
