The Turkish chemical industry consists of about 4,000 companies manufacturing various chemicals including petrochemicals, inorganic and organic chemicals, fertilizers, paints, pharmaceuticals, soaps and detergents, synthetic fibers, essential oils, cosmetics and personal care products. The quality and productivity in the Turkish chemical industry continues to improve as Turkey adopts the EU’s Technical Standards. Turkey has many natural resources allowing it to be among the main producers of soda ash, chrome and boron chemicals.
Polymer production related to textiles and the production of textile chemicals have developed simultaneously. Production of polyamide, polyester and acrylic fibers has developed from the large textile sector in Turkey and is directed to the foreign and domestic markets.
The fertilizer industry is a key industry for Turkey producing about 5.8 million tons per year. There are seven companies in Turkey which produce fertilizer exclusively.
Approximately 10% of the chemical industry’s production is within the pharmaceutical industry. There are about 3,100 pharmaceuticals currently on the market.
