Turkish Construction Industry

The Turkish construction sector accounts for over 6% of Turkey’s GDP and employs over 1.3 billion people. Turkish construction and engineering firms are able to design, erect, build and operate almost all kinds of civil and industrial projects ranging from hydroelectric power plants, large scale petroleum and natural gas pipelines, motorways, high-rise buildings, and hotel and tourist resorts. In 2008, 23 Turkish companies were listed in the “Top 225 International Contractors,” given by ENR – Engineering News Record, the leading industry magazine. Turkey had the third most companies in this report, following China and the U.S. Turkey also ranks among the top 12 producers of building materials in the world, with such products as cement, glass, steel and ceramic tiles.

Between the six year period of 2002 and 2008, the annual volume of business undertaken abroad in this sector increased from $1.7 billion to $23.6 billion. Turkish construction firms are highly sought after for their familiarity with business environments in nearby regions, qualified manpower and the ability to use modern technology. Today, foreign capital from the EU, USA, Japan and Australia prefer to cooperate with Turkish businessmen to enter into the Central Asian Republics. Turkish contractors have undertaken projects in 4 continents and 70 countries. Their competitiveness in this industry also comes from cost effective service at international standards, high client satisfaction, credibility in partnerships, and extensive knowledge and experience gained from a wide variety of projects. A positive growth rate in the construction sector is expected in the years ahead.
