Turkish Household Appliances Industry

Turkey’s household appliance sector has achieved tremendous growth since production was started as an assembly industry in the 1950s. Today, Turkey is the second largest household appliance producer in Europe with ambitions to increase production to become the leading European producer over the next decade. In 2006, production of the four main categories of household appliances (refrigerators, washing machines, ovens, and dishwashers) was over 15 million units. Two-thirds of these products were exported to Europe. In addition to more than 50 medium-scale manufacturing firms and the market’s major producers, there are also around 500 firms supplying parts and components. Companies such as Arcelik, the largest manufacturer in Turkey with close to 60% of the local market, are aspiring to become household names in the region. Vestel is the second largest household appliances manufacturer in Turkey, is focusing on producing for major international brand names and is expanding rapidly.

The aim of the Turkish household appliance sector is to produce environment-friendly and low water, energy, and detergent consuming products; products which are convenient and provide satisfaction, but remain affordable and meet future standards. The industry produces a wide product range from microwaves, electrical shavers, vacuum cleaners, food processors, and irons, which meet the needs of customers worldwide. Exports of Turkish household appliances increased 19.5% from 2006 to 2007 with the majority of exports being refrigerators, washing machines and oven cookers. The major export market of the Turkish household appliances industry is the EU although products are exported to over 160 countries and territories worldwide.
