The Turkish packaging industry has become a noteworthy sector in the country from its strong growth achieved during the past ten years. Growth in the sector has increased 10% during the past three years and is expected to continue at this rate in the coming years. The development in the industry has been fueled by increases in population and living standards, rapid urbanization, diversification of consumer goods and increases in exports. Innovations and production of environmentally friendly packaging in the sector have increased as well as the addition of new packaging formats.
Turkey produces all types of packaging materials and products including paper, cardboard, wrapping film, tape, plastics, glass, metal and wood. The largest sector of the industry is paper and corrugated board products accounting for approximately a third of the total packaging industry’s production. Total export value of paper packaging products reached $352 million in 2007 with a share of 18% of the total exports of the packaging industry. Another large sector in the industry is plastic packaging. The main plastic packaging products exported are flexible intermediate bulk containers such as sacks and bags. Turkey is the world’s largest exporter of FIBC (Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers) with a 29% share in 2006.
About 5,000 companies in Turkey manufacture various packaging materials. The majority of the companies are small and medium sized manufacturers along with a small amount of larger companies. Exports of the Turkish packaging industry have continued to grow reaching about $2 billion in 2007. A large quantity of packaging products is exported indirectly as the packages of exported products.
