The Turkish shipbuilding industry has evolved from an old tradition in Anatolia to an internationally known trademark since the early 1990s. The industry has modern, technologically developed and quality certified shipyards where new ships, yachts, mega-yachts, and sailing boats are manufactured. Turkey’s 40 shipyards are located in Tuzla, Marmara, and the Black Sea and Mediterranean regions. Turkey is an ideal production site for boating and mega-yacht building due to its advantageous location, experienced workforce and quality of production.
Ships produced in Turkey are manufactured in accordance with international standards including ISO 9000 and AQAP Quality Certificates and under the supervision of certain societies. Turkey is the top manufacturer of low-tonnage chemical tankers in Europe, receiving many orders for petrol tankers, chemical tankers and multipurpose container ships. Turkey is also third in the world for mega-yacht manufacturers. Turkish shipyards also provide repair and maintenance for their ships. Turkey’s exports have increased greatly due to higher production volume and product diversity. In 2007, Turkey’s shipbuilding industry exports reached $1.8 billion, a 23% increase from the year before. The main export product group was cruise ships, excursion boats, ferry boats, cargo ships, barges and similar vessels. Major markets for the shipbuilding industry are Malta, Germany, the Marshall Islands and France.
